Toronto in the Cold

It's quite cold in Toronto now.  Yesterday, on a bright morning, I took these photographs.  I was drawn to the drama of the steam and/or smoke rising from the chimneys.

House Paintings

I wanted to show you some more oil paintings that I've done over the past few years. These two are related. The house you see in House Spirit was next to a friend's place in Toronto. Here, it was in the process of being torn down. It was a beautiful old house that reminded me… Continue reading House Paintings

In the Mirror

I'm enjoying photographing these interior scenes. I was drawn to the contrast of light and dark in this image and the shifting, somewhat fragmented view of the room in the mirror.

Spiral Staircase at the Gallery

I was at the Art Gallery of Ontario yesterday.  The new buildings were designed by the architect Frank Gehry.  One very beautiful part of the new design is a spiral staircase.  I took this photo while walking down from the fourth floor. I like the image because it's one of those that makes you wonder… Continue reading Spiral Staircase at the Gallery

Interiors–Screen and Shadows

Here's another photograph--one I took a few days ago.  I loved the light through the screen, casting shadows of the plant and curtain. You can see a sliver of the plant through the space between the screen panels.

Interiors–The Light Photo

On the 17th, I looked up from writing and saw the light shining on the bulletin board in my room as I've never seen it.  I got my camera and took a few photos. This one reminds me of a shrine or altar.  So, for all of us on the longest night of the year… Continue reading Interiors–The Light Photo

Interiors–Broken Bowl Photo

This broken bowl, a common object, caught my attention with its beauty. I was drawn to the reflections on the side of the ceramic, as well as the bowl's shapes.  I used a black and white setting to emphasize these.

Night of Peace

Continuing with the theme of night near the winter solstice, Night of Peace is a small felt wall hanging I made in 2011.  It's made of synthetic felt that I hand stitched with cotton embroidery thread. You can see more details in my etsy shop.

Take Up The Night

I've begun writing poetry regularly during the last few years.  Before that, most of my creative work was in the visual arts.  Working with words at this point in my life is a great challenge, but one that I enjoy.  Because I'm familiar with the language, so to speak, of printmaking or design or painting,… Continue reading Take Up The Night

Seeds of Peace Wall Hanging

I made this cotton wall hanging in 2002.  It's 8 1/2" x 11." I deliberately left the edges raw to experiment with texture and sewed the piece by machine. Mola appliqués, a type of vibrant multi-layered work, were part of my inspiration for Seeds of Peace.
