I don’t know if you ever wonder what you’re doing on earth at this fraught time, but it’s something I wonder about. What has come to me is that, for reasons beyond what I can fathom, I’m here to witness what’s going on.
Over the past few months I’ve done little new artwork. Seeing images of and hearing about the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and increased violence in the West Bank led to my feeling that art was pointless in the face of such cruelty. However, that feeling shifted and I recently made the drawing Witness to Genocide. I didn’t know if the figure would be a witness or an image of resurrection until it took shape. As in much of my work, I allowed lines and shapes to appear without a definite plan. While I worked on the figure, it reminded me of images of different gods and goddesses around the world and, later, of some kind of religious icon. Here’s the drawing:

I know exactly what you mean by fraught times and in opposition to this I’m currently working on a very linear, structured, set of prints that will end up in a book. The order and formal layout I’m creating is helping to dispel the effects of much of the chaos and antagonism affecting me – things which I’m constantly seeing or hearing about from around the world.
What unsettling times we live in.
Yes. Thank you for this.
