I love these lines by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish that are part of his poem, Mural. The lines speak to me about so much of our world today, from genocide to climate change to extreme inequality to rising political authoritarianism. Darwish wrote Mural in 2000. The poem appears in the book If I Were Another which was translated into English by Fady Joudah.
…and everything that exceeds its limit
becomes its own opposite one day.
And life on earth is a shadow
we don’t see…
I sat with these words and drew the following sketch. I wasn’t trying to illustrate the words but to allow something to arise in a more unconscious way.
