I was out of town recently, on vacation east of Toronto. While I am accustomed to urban settings, having nearly always lived in a city, I was happy to go to quieter places away from the roar of traffic and closer to nature. My husband and I stayed in a small town and made day excursions to two provincial parks–Presqu’ile and Sandbanks. There, we took long walks on beaches that were not yet crowded with people. And, in Presqu’ile Park we also walked on a marsh boardwalk hearing the frogs and songs of marsh wrens and red-winged blackbirds.
I wanted to do some black and white photographing while away. I have been drawn to that kind of photography for years and have occasionally taken black and white photos. I took out an old digital camera I haven’t used recently, but found I didn’t recall how to use it. Because I didn’t want to spend the holiday studying the instructions, I relied on my phone’s camera which I set to open in mono. I enjoyed the process greatly. There’s an austere quality to black and white photography which suited my mood. Some of the images are almost abstract looking. Here’s several of them.
